Engage!

It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone (since we've been dating for three quarters of a decade), but I asked Chelsea to marry me and she said yes.

I actually ordered the ring about a month ago from a jeweler in New Mexico. I ordered from this guy after Chelsea and I did some research into diamonds that were mined in an ecologically responsible, and humane way- meaning basically, no Debeer's blood diamonds. So we found this guy in New Mexico who made rings with Canadian diamonds, and as an added bonus, did some pretty kickin' Celtic inspired designs on the band.

I ordered the ring in December, but it took a month to put it together. I kept imagining dwarves (Tolkien type dwarves) in their forges under a mountain hammering out a ring with the mithril they'd mined that day. Anyway. Eventually, the ring shipped. I followed it's product on FedEx's package tracking system as closely as I would normally follow a Red Sox playoff game. In particular, on the day it was due to arrive, I was checking FedEx maybe every ten minutes, and thinking "Oh God, what if it gets lost? What if it ends up at the wrong place? What if the FedEx truck gets attacked by dinosaurs?" You know how it is.

So the ring arrived, and I immediately made the decision not to wait. I didn't plan a dinner, or a trip, or anything fancy. I decided that Chelsea had waited long enough, and been patient enough that she deserved to be asked as soon as possible.

At the end of my work day, I went down the escalator. Chelsea was waiting at the bottom, reading "A Game of Thrones" by George RR Martin. I asked her how the book was, kissed her cheek, dropped to one knee, and asked her to marry me. She started tearing up, said "Oh my God" about 7 times, hugged me, and said yes.

And that is how it happened.
